A case study of ship track formation in a polluted marine boundary layer OMA
Noone, K.J.; Johnson, D.W.; Taylor, J.P.; Ferek, R.J.; Garrett, T.; Hobbs, P.V.; Durkee, P.A.; Nielsen, K.; Öström, E.; O'Dowd, C.; Smith, M.H.; Russell, L.M.; Flagan, R.C.; Seinfeld, J.H.; De Bock, L.; Van Grieken, R.; Hudson, J.G.; Brooks, I.; Gasparovic, R.F.; Pockalny, R.A..
A case study of the effects of ship emissions on the microphysical, radiative, and chemical properties of polluted marine boundary layer clouds is presented. Two ship tracks are discussed in detail. <i>In situ</i> measurements of cloud drop size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside-cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to remotely sensed measurements of cloud radiative properties. The authors examine the processes behind ship track formation in a polluted marine boundary layer as an example of the effects of anthropogenic particulate pollution on the albedo of marine stratiform clouds.

Air Pollution and Sea Pollution Seen from Space ArchiMer
Viatte, Camille; Clerbaux, Cathy; Maes, Christophe; Daniel, Pierre; Garello, René; Safieddine, Sarah; Ardhuin, Fabrice.
Air pollution and sea pollution are both impacting human health and all the natural environments on Earth. These complex interactions in the biosphere are becoming better known and understood. Major progress has been made in recent past years for understanding their societal and environmental impacts, thanks to remote sensors placed aboard satellites. This paper describes the state of the art of what is known about air pollution and focuses on specific aspects of marine pollution, which all benefit from the improved knowledge of the small-scale eddy field in the oceans. Examples of recent findings are shown, based on the global observing system (both remote and in situ) with standardized protocols for monitoring emerging environmental threats at the global...

Géochimie du mercure dans le continuum de la retenue de Petit-Saut et de l'estuaire du Sinnamary, Guyane française ArchiMer
Muresan Paslaru, Bogdan.
The mercury cycle was explored in the Petit-Saut reservoir / Sinnamary Estuary continuum in French Guiana. Main processes involve (i) photo-induced reduction, (ii) adsorption and desorption at the particle surfaces, (iii) methylating bacterial activity, (iv) precipitation and dissolution of iron oxyhydroxides and sulfides. Sources of mercury to the Petit-Saut reservoir consist of the partly impacted river-tributaries, the atmospheric deposition and the flooded soils or vegetation. Once into the reservoir, divalent mercury undergoes a large spectrum of transformations including speciation and phase changes. We, here, probe these processes and demonstrate that the Petit-Saut reservoir behaves as a privileged site for atmospheric recycling and in situ...

Geophysical Model Function for the AMSR2 C-Band Wind Excess Emissivity at High Winds ArchiMer
Zabolotskikh, Elizaveta V.; Reul, Nicolas; Chapron, Bertrand.
Measurements of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) onboard GCOM-W1 satellite at 6.925 and 7.3 GHz and both linear polarizations over tropical cyclones (TCs) during 2012 – 2014 are used to derive a new geophysical function relating the brightness temperature to the sea surface wind speed (SWS) in extreme conditions. . Similar sensitivity to SWS at close C-band frequencies allowed to correct for the atmospheric contributions to the microwave radiance and estimate the brightness temperature (TB) at the surface under the TCs, combining theoretical modeling and measured TB analyses. Estimated oceanic TBs were regressed against the wind speeds from the Best Track Archive to derive the new geophysical model function (GMF) for the wind speed...

Indo-Pacific Sea surface temperature perturbations associated with intraseasonal oscillations of tropical convection ArchiMer
Duvel, Jean Philippe; Vialard, Jerome.
The intraseasonal variability (ISV; 20-90 days) of the SST is examined using 7 yr of data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission's (TRMM) Microwave Imager ( TMI). The ISV of the SST is larger in the summer hemisphere and in regions of relatively small ocean mixed layer depth (MLD). For these regions, the reddening of the SST spectrum in regard to the surface flux spectrum suggests that the ISV of the SST is mostly controlled by the integration of the local surface forcing by ocean mixed layer. However, the precise origin of large-scale organized perturbations of the SST also depends on region and season. Since the ISV of the convection is an intermittent phenomenon, the local mode analysis (LMA) technique is used to detect only the ensemble of...

Levels and trends of brominated flame retardants in the European environment ArchiMer
Law, Robin J.; Allchin, Colin R; De Boer, Jacob; Covaci, Adrian; Herzke, Dorte; Lepom, Peter; Morris, Steven; Tronczynski, Jacek; De Wit, Cynthia A.
In this paper, we review those data which have recently become available for brominated flame retardants (particularly the brominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)) in samples from the European environment. Environmental compartments studied comprise the atmosphere, sediments and soils. sewage sludges. and a variety of biological samples and food chains. This is currently a very active research area, and we cite over 70 studies reported in the literature during 2003-04. Findings include that the input of BDEs (especially BDE209) to the Baltic Sea by atmospheric deposition now exceeds that of PCBs by a factor of almost 40 times. Sewage sludge samples from both industrial and background locations show concentrations of BDEs. HBCD...

Mercury speciation and exchanges at the air-water interface of a tropical artificial reservoir, French Guiana ArchiMer
Muresan Paslaru, Bogdan; Cossa, Daniel; Richard, S; Burban, B.
The distribution and speciation of mercury (Hg) in air, rain, and surface waters from the artificial tropical lake of Petit-Saut in French Guiana were investigated during the 2003/04 period. In the air, total gaseous mercury (TGM) at the dam station averaged 12 +/- 2 pmol m(-3) of which > 98% was gaseous elemental mercury (GEM). GEM distribution depicted a day-night cycling with high concentrations (up to 15 pmol m(-3)) at dawn and low concentrations (down to 5 pmol m(-3)) at nightfall. Reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) represented < 1% of the GEM with a mean concentration of 4 3 fmol m(-3). Diel RGM variations were negatively related to GEM. In the rain, the sum of all Hg species in the unfiltered (HgTUNF) averaged 16 +/- 112 pmol L-1. Temporal...

Radio-Frequency Interference Identification Over Oceans for C- and X-Band AMSR2 Channels ArchiMer
Zabolotskikh, Elizaveta; Mitnik, Leonid M.; Chapron, Bertrand.
A new method for radio-frequency interference (RFI) contamination identification over open oceans for the two C-subbands and X-band of Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) channel measurements is suggested. The method is based both on the AMSR2 brightness temperature (T-B) modeling and on the analysis of AMSR2 measurements over oceans. The joint analysis of T-B spectral differences allowed to identify the relations between them and the limits of their variability, which are ensured by the changes in the environmental conditions. It was found that the constraints, based on the ratio of spectral differences, are more regionally and seasonally independent than the spectral differences themselves. Although not all possible RFI combinations are...

Penny; Macintosh, Claire; Mcmillan, Malcolm; Moat, Ben; Russo, Maria; Tilling, Rachel; Carslaw, Ken; Desbruyeres, Damien; Embury, Owen; Feltham, Daniel L.; Grosvenor, Daniel P.; Josey, Simon; King, Brian; Lewis, Alastair; Mccarthy, Gerard D.; Merchant, Chris; New, Adrian L.; O'Reilly, Christopher H.; Osprey, Scott M.; Read, Katie; Scaife, Adam; Shepherd, Andrew; Sinha, Bablu; Smeed, David; Smith, Doug; Ridout, Andrew; Woollings, Tim; Yang, Mingxi.
Major changes are occurring across the North Atlantic climate system, including in the atmosphere, ocean and cryosphere, and many observed changes are unprecedented in instrumental records. As the changes in the North Atlantic directly affect the climate and air quality of the surrounding continents, it is important to fully understand how and why the changes are taking place, not least to predict how the region will change in the future. To this end, this article characterizes the recent observed changes in the North Atlantic region, especially in the period 2005–2016, across many different aspects of the system including: atmospheric circulation; atmospheric composition; clouds and aerosols; ocean circulation and properties; and the cryosphere. Recent...

Surface ocean-lower atmosphere study: Scientific synthesis and contribution to Earth system science ArchiMer
Breviere, Emilie H. G.; Bakker, Dorothee C. E.; Bange, Hermann W.; Bates, Timothy S.; Bell, Thomas G.; Boyd, Philip W.; Duce, Robert A.; Garcon, Veronique; Johnson, Martin T.; Law, Cliff S.; Marandino, Christa A.; Olsen, Are; Quack, Birgit; Quinn, Patricia K.; Sabine, Christopher L.; Saltzman, Eric S..
The domain of the surface ocean and lower atmosphere is a complex, highly dynamic component of the Earth system. Better understanding of the physics and biogeochemistry of the air-sea interface and the processes that control the exchange of mass and energy across that boundary define the scope of the Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) project. The scientific questions driving SOLAS research, as laid out in the SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy for the period 2004-2014, are highly challenging, inherently multidisciplinary and broad. During that decade, SOLAS has significantly advanced our knowledge. Discoveries related to the physics of exchange, global trace gas budgets and atmospheric chemistry, the CLAW hypothesis (named after its...
